Multiple roles for PrP in the prion diseases

Article Abstract:

The isoform of the prion protein PrP(super C), PrP(super Sc), is found to be a major part of a damaged brain suffering from transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) or prion diseases. Since mice without PrP(super C) are not affected by TSE, PrP protein is concluded to cause the disease. Studies on mice reveal that postsynaptic PrP is found to have a possible role in the proper performance of inhibitory synapses. There is also a possibility that synaptic regulation by PrP sustains a lasting life for Purkinje cells which are largely damaged in affected specimens.
