Houses of cards

Article Abstract:

The construction industry in Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand has been affected by financial crises in those countries. Public-sector infrastructure projects are likely to be reassessed as a result of the crisis. Private sector construction projects have been halted by the crisis, but basic infrastructure is less affected than residential projects. Hong Kong and Vietnam have been affected, though not as severely as the main countries hit by the crisis. The World Bank and other international institutions could help to provide security for infrastructure projects that are privately funded.

Arthritic nation

Article Abstract:

Japan's aging population is having an effect on its economy because of the natural conservative tendencies of older people, who are reluctant to make changes to lift Japan out of the economic slump in 1998. The number of Japanese people over the age of 65 is expected to rise from 16% of the population in 1998 to 30% of the population by 2035. An increasing grey population is counterbalanced by a decline in the birth rate, which has left the number of young people lower than the aging population.

Life on the line: insurers' crisis casts cloud over Tokyo stockmarket

Article Abstract:

There is a crisis in confidence throughout Japan's life insurance industry, following the collapse of Nissan Mutual Life Insurance, when policy holders discovered they would have to bear some of the debt. Japan's life insurance industry is the largest in the world, but some Japanese are now reviewing their insurance, which often carries heavy premiums. It is likely that more insurances will go bankrupt.
