Long road ahead

Article Abstract:

India and Pakistan are involved in a long-term dispute over Kashmir and two wars have been fought on this issue. The two countries are aware that their arms race is becoming dangerous and that the issue of Kashmir needs to be discussed. Resolution of the issue is not easy due to the involvement of national honor. India sees Kashmir as an expample of how its secular principles can work. Pakistan sees Muslims in Kashmir as in need of protection against a Hindu majority in India, which is sees as subjugating Kashmir's Muslims.

Article Abstract:

It is only recently in India that foreign policy has begun to be debated, although the country is still fiercely proud of the individualism that made it a founder member of the Non-Aligned Movement. There were bitter disputes between India and Pakistan in 1947 and 1965, however the Gujral Doctrine, initiated by Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral has yielded water sharing and power agreements with Bangladesh and Nepal, and relations with Pakistan are improving.
