Htoo good to be true?

Article Abstract:

Two nine year old twins, Johnny and Rocky Htoo, have become the leaders of a 500-strong rebel army in eastern Burma. The twins have won the support and confidence of the Karen people who live in refugee camps along the Burma-Thai border. The Karen believe that Johnny has supernatural power and can become invisible at will. Their willingness to believe in the twins underlines their desperation to find some way out of their plight. They have often resorted to theories of Messianic deliverance when times are very hard. Johnny hears voices and can call on assistance from spirits in battle.

Clouds over Kyoto

Article Abstract:

Delegates to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will discuss the global imposition of measures to reduce levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Some experts believe that, if governments do not check the rise in these levels, global temperatures will increase and there will be a rise in sea level due to melting of the polar ice caps. However, the imposition of carbon dioxide emission restrictions is costly and it would restrict growth. There is also disagreement in the scientific community as to whether global warming really will occur.

Heed South Asia's concerns

Article Abstract:

The international response to recent nuclear tests by India and Pakistan was one of shock and horror but the real reason behind the tests was that South Asia has been excluded from the international stage for 50 years. The international community has to pay attention to India's worries about China. Imposing economic sanctions has not worked and incentives need to be developed to encourage India and Pakistan to cooperate. Stability in South Asia will affect energy resources globally so internal conflict must be resolved.
