Indian activists' rising clout: U.K. company's plan for mine is threatened by environmentalist ire

Article Abstract:

U.K. mining company Vedanta Alumina Ltd. is awaiting a ruling by India's Supreme Court as to whether the firm has a right to mine for bauxite in a sacred tribal forest located in the Niyamgiri hills. The mining operation is a segment of an $800 mil project that includes a power plant. Opponents of the plan state that Vedanta did not disclose that it intended to use the land as part of its project and did not obtain approval from India's Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Apollo may top Bain in bidding for Cendant unit

Article Abstract:

Apollo Advisors L.P. of the United States is the frontrunner over Bain Capital L.L.C. of the United States in the bid for the Cendant Corp. marketing services division. Both bids are higher than the $2 billion originally expected for the acquisition.

Judge's ruling in LTCM case may resonate
