Information technology and strategy revisited

Article Abstract:

Information technology expenditures, encompassing purchases of data processing and telecommunications equipment, are analyzed for major US corporations and industries. The US banking industry spends an average $8 to $10 billion on such technologies each year. The economic wisdom of such capital expenditures is questioned. Information technology cannot benefit companies economically until outdated work patterns, organizational methods, and hierarchies are revised to allow the technologies to realize cost savings. The strategies of four US corporations related to information technology expenditures and management thereof are examined. The companies are: American Airlines, American Hospital Supply Corp, City National Bank, and Citibank.
