Interest-rate cuts in the U.S. alter little in Asia

Article Abstract:

Some Asian companies will use low interest rates in the United States as a rationale for entering the bond market, but bank lending and stock prices in Asia have not been much affected by the latest cuts in U.S. interest rates. Singapore Telecommunications Ltd, Singapore Airlines and Pacific Century CyberWorks (Hong Kong) all plan to issue bonds. Continued uncertainty over the general economic outlook, however, may continue to depress demand for bank loans in Asia, as will overcapacity in the U.S. and reduced consumption in the U.S. and Asia.

Fed's move annoys region's bank-deposit watchers

Article Abstract:

Asian reaction to the seventh U.S. Federal Reserve interest rate cut this year is one of annoyance. The quarter-point cut came with warnings that the U.S. economy is still weak. Many analysts feel that the Asian economy will not recover until the U.S. is able to boost commerce.
