Is Apec irrelevant?

Article Abstract:

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum has been largely irrelevant to fast-growing intra-Asian trade. In this critical market it has never made a difference with any of its pronouncements, and it has not succeeded in lowering the barriers that hold the region back as Europe and North America surge ahead. Intra-Asian trade will boom, but it may well do so in spite of APEC, leaving the latter's goals and initiatives in the dust.

Give Nafta a chance

Article Abstract:

The North American Free Trade Agreement may slightly restrict Asian penetration of that region's markets, by enhancing local competitiveness. By strengthening the economies of Canada, the US and especially Mexico, however, it will create markets able to buy more Asian goods. It will also create a more stable investment environment by cementing the reforms instituted unilaterally by Mexican Pres Carlos Salinas de Gortari.

A cut above the rest

Article Abstract:
