Italy's railways move slowly towards privatisation

Article Abstract:

Finsiel, the information technology subsidiary of the Italian state's Stet telecommunications holding, has been selected by state railway operator Ferrovie Dello Stato (FS) as its partner in a separate information technology company. FS's information technology operations are valued at around $130 million. The new concern will hold a 10-year contract to provide FS with information technology services, and is expected to produce $460 million in financial benefits over the next 10 years.

Labs going private

Article Abstract:

The privatisation of the Transport Research Laboratory, which is expected to be completed by the end of 1995, is part of a wider UK government programme to move laboratories into the private sector. It has already reached agreement on contracting out management of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), which relies on the DTI for more than 80% of its business, and plans to transfer the National Engineering Laboratory to the private sector by the end of Oct 1995.

Four more UK rail franchises offered

Article Abstract:

Franchising is now taking place for 40% of the UK rail network in revenue terms, with Midland Main Line, the Gatwick Express, Network SouthCentral and Intercity East Coast being the latest franchises to be made available. It is thought that Virgin Group is interested in the Gatwick Express franchise, while Intercity East Coast, British Rail's most profitable route, has attracted interest from potential bidders including London and Continental and Sea Containers.
