Article Abstract:

The Japanese government is encouraging more overseas investment in a bid to restore public confidence, dented by corruption scandals, local government debt and political unrest. The planned deregulation of Japan's financial markets is continuing and the prospect of internationalisation is opening up opportunities for British exporters and investors. Businesses seeking successful investment should ensure that they carefully select potential partners, be patient and undertake detailed research. Japan is the UK's second-largest export market outside the European Union.

Article Abstract:

A survey has reported that many UK companies are not keen for Britain to be one of the first countries to join the Economic European Union (EMU), while 61% of companies did not think they could make an informed decision about EMU. Banks and shops have begun to look at the implications of EMU, and Marks and Spencers is planning to operate with the two currencies. Other issues which need consideration are the legal and financial implications, such as trading and invoicing in euros, amd ensuring that computers can operate in both currencies.

Germany: raising the Teutonic

Article Abstract:

Britain exported goods worth 20 billion pounds sterling to Germany in 1995, making Germany Britain's major export market. British companies are also operating in Germany, and more opportunities are likely to arise. However, as very few German companies have been floated on the stock market, it may be difficult to identify these investment opportunities. Other problems include high taxes, complex legislation and high salary costs. Advice is given about which industries to target, selecting a partner, and where to invest.
