Justice under siege

Article Abstract:

The legal community and others in Hong Kong fear that Chinese control in 1997 will bring a complete breakdown in the legal order that is the mainstay of their economy. Threatening signs include a dispute over the judges on the Court of Final Appeal, China's decision to discard the Bill of Rights, and China's announcement that all Hong Kong judges must be reappointed after 1997. Law and order in China appear to operate by fiat, creating chaos and making it difficult for Westerners to make business decisions.

Lower pitch: Japan's economic slowdown hits advertising

Article Abstract:

Japan's advertising media is being seriously affected by the country's economic slowdown. The economic climate has forced many companies to cut down on promotions. As a result, 1992 advertising expenditures are expected to be much lower than the previous year's figure of 5.7 trillion yen. Although bigger media companies are expected to ride out the slump, smaller firms are expected to go bankrupt or be absorbed by larger competitors.

Unsafe building

Article Abstract:

The technically insolvent Azabu Building Co has remained in operation as creditors dispose of its assets while hoping for minimal disruptions to an already weakened property market. Although the company has been undergoing creditor-enforced restructuring since Feb 1992, industry observers suspect that Azabu is slowly being dismantled. The company owes its creditors an estimated $5.7 billion.
