Lama chic: from Hollywood to Manhattan, Tibet is the flavour of the season

Article Abstract:

There is a rising tide of fascination with Tibet according to Orville Schell, veteran China-watcher, with two major Hollywood movies about Tibet planned. Tibet retains an aura of mystery and intrigue, having been cut off from the outside world for many years, supressed for years by China. The leader-in-exile, the Dalai Lama, writes and lectures extensively on the plight of his country, and the Tibetan cause has been propelled into American consciousness.

Chinatown goes uptown

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong entrepreneur David Tang launched the New York, New York branch of his speciality Shanghai Tang department store in Nov 1997. Tang has a following in celebrity circles and the launch was high-profile, featuring many of Tang's celebrity friends. However, the New York public is used to associating China with goods of a low-budget, unreliable nature, so Tang may have trouble persuading New Yorkers to view his goods as desirable.

The dragon's teeth; a new generation of brutal gangs is poised to take over New York's Chinatown

Article Abstract:

A number of recent high-profile arrests have reduced the effectiveness of crime organizations operating in New York City's Chinatown. Some experts fear that the arrests will provide opportunities for new and more violent groups of gangs from mainland China. The newer gangs often come from China's Fujian province and tend to be more loosely organized in smaller groups than traditional Chinatown crime groups.
