Last chapter: the East European shtetl

Article Abstract:

Ukraine's Jewish settlements, or shtetls, are fast becoming extinct as the combination of open emigration and poverty at home forces many resident Jews immigrants to seek better lives elsewhere. Much of the financial support to these shtetls comes from the Joint Distribution Committee, financed by American Jews, which provides relief goods and services to impoverished residents. Although the small communities are dwindling, there are still 500,000 Jews in the Ukraine, concentrated primarily in large cities such as Kiev.
