Jospin turns timid

Article Abstract:

French prime minister, Lionel Jospin, heads a coalition government, and initially performed well, but has then made a number of clumsy moves such as using higher tax revenues for tax cuts, and failing to act more strongly on pension reform. Jospin is concerned about labor unions and being elected as president. Plans to reform the public sector, especially the finance minister, have been abandoned after labor union protests. Jospin needs to focus more on reform and less on elections.

Lionel Jospin's soggy programme

Article Abstract:

French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin failed to give a clear signal to the public with regards the direction he would take with regards economic policy. The French public is still unaware whether Mr. Jospin will push for the inclusion of France in the Euro at the expense of his campaign promises of employment increases and deficit reductions, push for the attainment of his campaign promises at the expense of French inclusion in the Euro, or push for both. He might try to push for both as he maintains but to do so seems impossible considering the present economic situation of the country.
