Gummer calls for 'courteous' townscape design

Article Abstract:

John Gummer, UK environment minister, has called for urban design to be at the centre of the development process and for more attention to be paid to small scale 'courteous' townscape elements. The minister was speaking at the Quality in Town and Country exhibition of 21 schemes which will form the base for a good practice note. The exhibition has been welcomed by RIBA president Owen Luder, who sees it as a way for making the case for quality.

English Heritage joins attack on Portsmouth plan

Article Abstract:

English Heritage has warned that plans by HGP Greentree Allchurch Evans for the Gunwharf site in Portsmouth could be a national failure. Criticisms include a lack of respect for the so-call Vulcan building, and the proposed perimeter blocks which Bill Startin, head of EH's south-east team, conservation, believes are bulky and too prominent. Startin is also concerned that the proposals favour the demolition of many existing structures, rather than putting them to new use.
