New EU-merger regulator is business-friendly liberal

Article Abstract:

Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, the new president of the European Commission, has named several pro-market individuals to key economic posts at the European Union's governing body. Neelie Kroes of the Netherlands will oversee bank mergers, Peter Mandelson of Britain will oversee trade, Charlie McCreevey of Ireland will oversee internal market issues, and Joaquin Almunia of Spain will oversee monetary affairs. All four of the appointees are expected to pursue business-friendly agendas.

ABN Amro plans to offer buyouts at consumer unit

Article Abstract:

ABN Amro is planning to offer a majority of its consumer banking employees financial compensation in exchange for resigning as part of a corporate restructuring. The company will offer the compensation to 75% of the employees.
