New T&T sees housing phone crisis in 2001

Article Abstract:

In response to the Government's telecom market review consultation, New T&T warned residents may face sharp rise in local telephone after the price regulation is lifted in 2001. Currently, only less than 0.5% of households are connected with telephone companies. Hongkong Telecom still control most telecom network. In other words, most residents have little choice on fixed network service. Earlier, Hongkong Telecom said it would raise the prices by over 30% from HK$69 to 90 from 1 January 1999. New T&T forecast further price rise to HK$100 and HK$110 in 2000 and 2001. *

New challenge to HK Telecom

Niq Lai, a telecoms analyst with Credit Suisse First Boston (Hong Kong) said Hongkong Telecom would have a hard time as global alliances would enter Hong Kong which regarded as a gateway into China. This would intensify competition in Hong Kong market. However, the analyst believed Hongkong Telecom had well prepared for competition as it already had extensive global connections through its parent Cable & Wireless. *
