New kids in Tinsel Town

Article Abstract:

Hollywood movie studios, constantly seeking new directors able to boost revenues, are increasingly looking to China for new talent. Stanley Tong and Peter Chan are two of a new breed of Chinese directors whose success could encourage other Asian film makers to seek fame in America. Tong has directed four Jackie Chan films, including international hits Rumble and First Strike, while Chan is to direct a romance for a major studio. Hollywood film studios regard Chinese directors as world-class film-makers able to tackle a wide range of topics.

Bollywood blues: India's film makers fight off a Hollywood invasion

Article Abstract:

The remarkable success 'Jurassic Park' enjoyed in Indian theaters forced filmmakers in Bollywood, Bombay's movie industry, to reexamine what their audiences want. Since then few other Hollywood blockbusters have done well, in part because few rely so little on dialogue and character, where cultural differences raise a high barrier. Some Bollywood producers are competing head-on by using more special effects, others are stealing Hollywood movies outright, and some are turning to what critics laud as family values.
