Next move awaited in Indian SP howitzer competition

Article Abstract:

The procurement program of the Indian Army for self-propelled (SP) howitzers based on the indigenously produced T-72MI tank chassis has been terminated due to the incapability of the platform to support the requirement. According to officials, use of the T-72MI chassis would call for upgrades to its suspension, engine and brakes. The Indian Ministry of Defence is currently exploring the potentials of the Arjun tank chassis for the SP howitzer role, although the platform is seen as incapable for the role with its present engine and is considered as more feasible for other less demanding artillery applications.

Sweden faces budget crunch

Article Abstract:

The shortfall of $1.3 billion in Sweden's defense budget under the five-year plan is expected to delay the country's military equipment programs. The budget shortage was incurred mainly from the over estimated savings expectations from base closures and disbanding of operational units, especially in the Army. Cutting of military personnel is considered as improbable since parliamentarians will prefer not to terminate their constituents, particularly when the general elections in the country is imminent. Among the projects that will be delayed by the reduced budget is the A3W 2000 off-route mine.

Denmark trims defenses to hone its edge

Article Abstract:

The Danish Parliament has approved a compromise five-year defense program covering the period 2000-2004. Under the defense agreement, cuts to defense spending and personnel will be less severe compared to the proposal of the Danish government to reduce defense spending from DKr17.336 billion in 1999 to DKr16.407 billion in 2000. The compromised deal calls for a defense budget of DKr16.69 in the year 2000 with cuts in the succeeding periods.
