No deal: Jakarta rebuffs Lisbon's initiative on Timor

Article Abstract:

President Suharto of Indonesia rebuffed an overture by Portuguese prime minister Antonio Guterres at the 1996 Asia-Europe summit in Bangkok, leaving the conflict over East Timor's future simmering. The words were the first exchanged by heads of those two states since Indonesia annexed E Timor in 1976. They may also have signaled Guterres' effort to depart from the path of former Portuguese President Marion Soares, showing activity to the Timor lobby at home while keeping the issue subdued to please European Union heads.
