This article discusses the Moroccan government's August 6, 1999, announcement about how it raised roughly US$1.1 bil from the sale of a second GSM telecoms license to a consortium led by Telefonica of Spain. The consortium also included Portugal Telecom, Afriquia Group and BMCE Bank. Details about the concession and auction are presented. Other news about the Moroccan government's privatization activities is also presented.

Brazil cellphone concession confirmed

Article Abstract:

The B-band mobile phone licensing program in Brazil has been held up by legal proceedings. The Communications Ministry can not grant five licences until an appeal involving one bidder, the Tess consortium, is over. The Tess consortium has challenged the ministry's right to exclude the Tess bid. The case is expected to end in April 1998. B-band bidding organizations may now opt for A-band licence bids.

NTT DoCoMo offer is world's largest initial public offering

Article Abstract:

The initial public offering of cellular telephone company NTT DoCoMo has resulted in the gain of Y2,125.5bn or US$18.4bn. The major sellers were Nippon Telephone and Telegraph, who sold 218,000 shares, and DoCoMo, who sold 327,000 shares.
