Observers question Chapters deal

Article Abstract:

Bookstore chain Chapters' acquisition by electronics retail chain Future Shop has caught many industry observers by surprise. Among them is Douglas Reid, from the Queen's School of Business in Kingston, Ontario, who foresees very little synergy from the merger. Reid is skeptical about the success of combining two very different operations. However, Future Shop is not interested in Chapter's book operations but in its real estate portfolio, according to Reid.

Metro

Article Abstract:

Metro, a Quebec-based grocery chain, has launched an advertising campaign with the same `Grocers by Profession' tag line but with a different theme. The $5 million campaign, which was produced by advertising agency Cossette Communication-Marketing, is aimed at residents of Quebec, hoping to convince them that the chain is better than the larger grocery stores. The campaign is the first to be handled by Cossette after its replacement of Publicis BCP.

A wall of silence around retailers' growing clout

Article Abstract:

There has been a shift in power in the relationship between retailers and manufacturers in Canada. Major restructuring and consolidation in the retail industry have strengthened their control of shelf space. Thus, retailers have a strong position in demanding lower prices. Price is very important to retailers because they have to maximize their return per square foot of increasingly expensive real estate.
