Odd couple: nuclear shadow over North Korea-Ukraine talks

Article Abstract:

Ukrainian and North Korean delegations held diplomatic meetings in Kiev, prompting fears of an unofficial nuclear alliance between the two. Ukrainian officials defended the meetings as an expression of an independent foreign policy, and insisted that military matters were not discussed. However, the North Korean delegation did emphasize its ongoing resistance to US pressure on the nuclear issue. North Korea has been reluctant to sign the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, and the Ukraine has taken to using its nuclear force as a bargaining chip for national security.

Leap of fate: a tragic fall turns a champion skier's life upside down

Article Abstract:

Uzbekistani ski champion Lina Tcheryazova is struggling back from injury amid hardship and deprivation after winning her country's first Olympic gold medal in 1994. She was nearly killed in a training accident last June in the US, after which her sponsors pulled out and the Uzbek Sports Committee ran out of money to pay for medical treatment and safety equipment. She hopes to return to world leadership in her sport of freestyle aerial skiing, though Uzbeki prejudice against ethnic Russians may force her to compete elsewhere.
