Out of bounds: Salim's foreign foray sparks furore at home

Article Abstract:

There has been a outcry in Indonesia over the Salim Group's decision to move ownership of Indofood Sukses Makmur to Singapore, and there are concerns that other Indonesian businesses seeking to move overseas will receive the same treatment. Salim's Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa is to sell off its stake in Indofood to QAF Ltd of Singapore. The move will enable Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa to concentrate on its core cement business, and provide Indofood with new opportunities throughout Asia, according to group chief executive officer Anthony Salim.

Water of strife: Washington opposes proposed sea-lane rules

Article Abstract:

Opposition from the US and elsewhere has greeted Indonesia's latest effort to restrict shipping through the Java Sea. Jakarta wants to establish three shipping lanes to which all commercial and military traffic would be restricted, though warships could sail outside the lanes with most equipment switched off. US military officials oppose that and say under the Law of the Sea Convention, the International Maritime Organization should set out rules. Indonesia's 1978 depth-charging of two Soviet submarines is also revealed.
