Sounding off: vocal artist sets sights on international stardom

Article Abstract:

Malaysian musician Zainal Abidin's true identity remains elusive after his second solo album and popular success at home and, to an extent, overseas. He has been labeled an environmentalist and a world-beat artist, both of which he rejects. For his latest album, 'Gamal,' he portrayed himself as a native of Sarawak, though his music, with influence from Africa, Brazil, and artists Sting and Paul McCartney, is not particularly Sarawakian. He was born into poverty in Johor, Malaysia, and founded the popular group Headwind.

Stoking a stake

Article Abstract:

Kerry Stokes on Apr 11-12, 1995, made a bold move on television broadcaster Seven Network through his Australian Equity Capital, amassing a 6.5% stake. Seven is currently being courted by both Rupert Murdoch and Kerry Packer, with analysts giving Murdoch the edge. Stokes has close business ties to Murdoch, tipping the scales further. Seven Network is Australia's second-largest free-to-air broadcaster and could play a key role in the emerging pay-TV market that both Murdoch and Packer desire.
