Privatisation Commission power ahead in Pakistan

Article Abstract:

A number of privatisation schemes are currently being discussed by the Pakistan government's Privatisation Commission. These include the sale of a 10% stake in the 1,600MW power plant at Kot Addu, which is at present controlled by the state Water and Power Development Authority. However, National Power recently purchased a 26% stake and has expressed interest in purchasing a further 10%. The commission is also considering selling a 26% stake with management control in the 880MW Jamshoro power station.

Japan power firm targeted

Article Abstract:

The Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry is looking at ways of increasing competition among the country's electric utilities. At present, the country is split between 10 private utilities, and there is little competition between them. It is possible that quasi-governmental Electric Power Development Co may be privatised, becoming an independent power wholesaler. This would play a key role in increasing competition in the power generation sector.
