Product review

Article Abstract:

The roofing element of building projects has often borne the brunt of cost cuts, but this is a short sighted approach and can be expensive in the long term. Coated steel roofing products are estimated to account for over 80% of new industrial roofing in the UK, and composite insulated metal panels have been a major growth area. When undertaking a flat-to-pitch roof conversion, it is important to consider the structure of the original building, waterproofing and drainage, condensation and access. Single-skin fibre-cement sheeting is advantageous in agricultural applications, and corrugated roof sheeting was used for a factory and office building in the Snowdonia National Park.

Theme: membrane roofing

Article Abstract:

Some representative bodies of the UK roofing materials industry hope to introduce a scheme where the standards of installation and the quality of materials are assured. Research into sustainable roofing materials continues. Sales of membrane roofing reached over 21 million square metres of flat roofing materials in 1998. A number of UK producers have changed owners, such as Callenders, Anderson Waterproofing and Vulcanite which are now owned by the Icopal Group. A number of the trade bodies have introduced information booklets on how to best use their products.

Product review

Article Abstract:

Concrete interlock roof tiles are now the most popular domestic roofing material in the UK, with sales estimated at 20 million sq mt in 1996. Slates account for around one eighth of sales, with the rest of the residential roofing material market being made up by roofing felts, asphalt and clay tiles. Considerable efforts have been made over recent years to address the problems which are commonly experienced with residential roofing materials. Breathing felt underlays, for example, can help to avoid problems with condensation and wetting of timber rafters.
