Rags and riches: a Buryat Mongol girl makes good on New York's catwalks

Article Abstract:

Irina Pantaeva has reached unlikely heights of fame in nineteen months of modeling in New York, New York after growing up a Buryat Mongol girl in a Siberian backwater. Photographers and writers rave over her otherworldly beauty, though in person she seems quite normal and down-to-earth. Her round face with unusual planes and geometry counterpoints a long-limbed, birdlike body and places her squarely in the center of a rising demand for an Oriental look among models. Now 23, she exudes energy and interest in other projects.

A king's ransom

Article Abstract:

Gary Kasparov's bold departure from the International Chess Federation and his creation of the Professional Chess Assn may be vindicated by the hype surrounding his present championsip match against Indian-born Viswanathan Anand. The match is taking place atop the World Trade Center in NY, carried on national tv and sponsored by computer chip-maker Intel, with a $1.5 million purse. The prize money may be influencing both players, who have taken more conservative approaches than is usual for them.
