Reef grief: hot Australian resort takes a hit as its casino falters

Article Abstract:

The Reef Casino and hotel complex in the Australian resort city of Cairns, northern Queensland, has reported a loss of $4.7 million. The Reef Casino Trust, owner of the complex, has recently had to halt trading on its stock as share prices plunged. Chairman John Coates explained that the poor performance was due to gaming losses and the depressed tourism market. However the Reef has been struggling since it opened in January 1996, and, although Cairns developed rapidly, the expected high growth rates did not continue.
