Rising crime rate leads to shakeup of Taiwan cabinet; several government officials resign as public grows impatient with corruption and violence

Article Abstract:

Public anger over the rise in crimes and government corruption in Taiwan has caused several government officials to resign. Justice Minister Ma Ying-jeou, Interior Minister Lin Feng-cheng and the chairman of Taiwan's Council of Agriculture Tjiu Mau-ying have quit their posts to show responsibility for the wave of violent crimes that has plagued the nation. Wealth alone won't fix South Korea

Article Abstract:

The South Korean economy needs political reform if ever it is to regain its prowess. Wealth alone will not help the country, as scandals such as the Hanbo Steel collapse may be repeated if the political system is not changed. Change must also come from the people with the government, bureaucratic streamlining, and deregulation of various industries that would help in restoring the pace of the country's economic activity.

Kim Dae Jung fills his ministerial team with supporters

Article Abstract:

South Korean President Kim Dae Jung has replaced nearly half of this cabinet in what appears to be a move toward reconciliation with North Korea. The change-over is not expected to have a significant impact on the country's economic policies because Finance Minister Jin Nyum is remaining. Foreign Minister Lee Joung Binn has been replaced with Han Seung Soo, a former ambassador to the United States.
