Roche deal fuels change on books

The Financial Accounting Standards Board plans to eliminate the popular 'pooling of interests' accounting method which was used by Roche Holding AG in the acquisition of Genentech Inc whose stock rose from $97 to about $166. Under the new system, the purchasing company must write off goodwill, which would lower earnings.

WTO reaches deal on drugs for poor

A small group of important countries and the U.S have reached a deal on providing cheap medicines for poor nations. The agreement, which must be approved by the World Trade Organization, was reached after drug firms were given patent safeguards.

Invitrogen comes to Dexter's rescue, adding life to its gene-study trade
