Rough justice: executions surge in tough anti-crime drive

Article Abstract:

China's mid-1996 anti-crime drive has netted more than 100,000 arrests before reaching its halfway point, though legal scholars and civil-rights advocates are protesting in chorus over alleged abuses. Amnesty International claims at least 730 executions have taken place, and the total officially revealed at the end of 1996 could reach 5,000. The drive is more effective than such crackdowns have been in the past, and reveals the party's continued control over the legal system. Crime has also touched senior political figures.

Potboiler nationalism

Article Abstract:

An English language translation of a work expressing official views on China has been cancelled and there are good reasons why 'Megatrends China' should not be published. The articles in this work express jingoistic appeals and include a view that the US aims to control China through issues such as the environment and human rights. There is concern within China that using nationalism as a tool to win support could create problems and lead to confirmation of anti-Chinese views held by some people in the US.

Stealthy deal: company closure raises arms-trade concerns in the territory

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong government lawyers agreed in July that Rex International Development, a company set up by Tsui Tsin-tong and Norinco, an arms maker, should be voluntarily closed. It was alleged that the company sold high grade steel pipes to Iran for possible weapons use. This has increased public concern over Hong Kong's future role as a route for China's arms exports. Much of the arms trade is legal, but Hong Kong's free port and free business environment weakens its ability to monitor the traffic.
