Russia sets new standard for the MiG-29

Article Abstract:

The Russian Air Force, under a program that starts of September 1998, will remanufacture as much as 180 of its MiG-29 fighters to MiG-29SMT standard. ANPK MIG Director General Mikhail Korzhuev said such efforts are the only way to boost the service's efficiency in the midst of inadequate financing. Korzhuev also said that the latest version of the MiG-29 will have additional 1,650kg of fuel in a new tank placed in the fuselage's upper section. Meanwhile, the most extensive change called for the MiG-29SMT involves the avionics suite and the N-019MP fire-control radar will have a synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) mode for ground mapping.
