Salesman Schroder

Article Abstract:

Social Democrat candidate for the post of German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, has failed to provide details of his policies if he is elected. The chairman of the Social Democrats, Oskar Lafontaine, has persuaded Schroder to undo welfare reforms that the government has sought to enact. It is unclear how much power the German Greens would have if Schroder were to set up a coalition government with them. Germany faces increasing unfunded pension liabilities, inflexible labor laws, and high taxes. Schroder will miss an opportunity for reform if he is elected and continues to be bland when in power.

Gerhard Schroder's task

Article Abstract:

The German Social Democrats have become the Bundestag's largest party following elections in Sep 1998. The second chamber is already controlled by the Social Democrats and the left holds a majority in the electoral college or Federal Assembly. Gerhard Schroder, the new chancellor, has to tackle the problem of unemployment and the problem is tied up with the lack of flexibility in the labor market. State subsidies, taxes, social security deductions and wages are too high, and the opposition to tackling these problems may come from within the Social Democrats.
