Sikorsky renews Turkish efforts

Article Abstract:

Fifty S-70A Black Hawk helicopters are being offered for sale to the Turkish military by Sikorsky following an appeal by the Turkish military for more utility helicopters. Sikorsky previously had delivered 45 S-70A Black Hawk helicopters to Turkey in 1990, using the now-defunct US Export-Import Bank loan guarantees. The Turkish government had cancelled delivery of the additional 50 helicopters due to a conflict with the US government over its human rights record, and has recently instead relied on the French-made Eurocopter Cougar helicopters.

Negotiations between Boeing Helicopters and Helifly over production rights to the MD900 Explorer line of helicopters have been joined by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), which will be the principal manufacturer for the helicopters. TAI, which is 42%-owned by Lockheed Martin and offers the benefit of lower manufacturing costs, will construct the helicopter's main fuselage, which previously had been built by Australia-based Hawker de Havilland. Boeing is close to obtaining certification for the plan, which has a value of about $100 million.
