So that's democracy?

Article Abstract:

The election held on Nov 18, 1996, in Zambia has attracted considerable controversy. Former President Kenneth Kaunda was banned from standing, and this prompted his United National Independence Party, among others, to boycott the election. There was a low turnout, with President Frederick Chiluba being re-elected with 70% of the vote. The government of Zambia has also attracted controversy because of allegations about involvement in drugs.

The miseries of magnetism: South Africa(stemming the flow of immigrants)

Article Abstract:

South Africa is having a hard time controlling the flow of immigrants into the country now that blacks have been given political power and freedom. The immigrants come mainly from Mozambique, where there is much greater poverty. The government is putting tougher immigration controls in place.

The miseries of modeldom: Zambia

Article Abstract:

Zambia is in the midst of a conversion to a market economy that was hoped to be a model for all Africa, but the country's poor see no improvement in their lives. Citizens are protesting the selling off of state-owned companies to the highest bidders, mostly white foreigners.
