Southampton sets sail

Article Abstract:

The economy of Southampton, UK, relies heavily on the leisure, marine and defence/electronics sectors. One of the main factors behind the ability of Southampton firms to grow is the availability of equity capital funds for investment. The pleasant quality of life also means firms can attract skilled staff and managers. The local workforce is also well equipped with engineering skills, thanks to local industries such as aircraft building and shipbuilding. The UK economic recovery and the availability of finance has led to good mergers and acquisitions activity in the area in 1995.

Southampton has come of age

Article Abstract:

Southampton, UK, has become more independent of London professionals and financiers and is now a regional centre for big management buyouts (MBOs) in central southern England. One the major events which contributed towards the trend to use local investors and advisers was the 1993 buyout of City Technology from City University: this was a 27 million pounds sterling deal which historically would have been funded and advised from London. For MBO teams, using local professionals brings them the benefit of local knowledge and experience, speed of response, and competitive costs.

Management team gets the bird

Article Abstract:

Both trade buyers and financial investors bid to buy UK chicken producer Webbs Country Foods when it was put up for sale in 1998, with venture capital firm 3i putting in the winning but undisclosed bid. Webbs Country Foods was an attractive proposition because of its healthy turnover which reached 135 million pounds sterling in 1997, due to high volume of sales to large retail chains such as Sainsbury and Asda. Chicken sales have increased in the UK due to greater awareness of healthy eating and a decrease in consumption of beef due to health scares.
