Stains that remain

Article Abstract:

The Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989 continues to cause problems in 1999, with herring and salmon among the species affected. Oil remains under the sand and in crevices. Exxon does not appear to have suffered from attempting the clean-up, and could deduct many early costs from federal taxes. The company has been criticised for paralysing a case for punitive damages against it. Meanwhile, there is concern that a similar spill could occur, despite the safeguards in place to prevent such an accident.

How green is Browne?

Article Abstract:

BP Amoco chief executive, John Browne, is involved in a number of environmentally friendly projects, including the planned acquisition of solar-energy company, Solarex. Browne also supports the Kyoto summit aims of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. Browne forecasts that there will be a stronger rise in demand for natural gas and other clean energy than for petroleum. He is concerned about global warming and sees a need for the company to be attuned to the concerns of its consumers.
