Banking on success

Article Abstract:

Consolidation and liberalization encouraged European banking institutes to undertake a large amount of merger and acquisition activity during 1999, with a total of $282 billion worth of deals eventually closed between January and December. The delicate nature of cross-border transactions was dealt with efficiently and effectively by a wide array of advisory firms who were able to provide expertise and financial backing for such deals.

Come the revolution

Article Abstract:

Some observers fear the French government's positive attitude to the hostile takeover bid by Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP), for Paribas and Societe Generale (SG), may inadvertently open the French market to foreign banks. But the government feels the deal will be good for the French market. BNP had already unsuccessfully tried to make deals with several other banking institutions. The takeover of Paribas and SG by BNP will create a bank with a market capitalisation of some $50 billion. SG had offered to buy Paribas for $18.2 billion prior to the BNP bid of $36 billion for the two banks.

Stretched Fig teams square up

Article Abstract:

Almost all European advisory houses could eventually become embroiled in the takeover bid for UK bank NatWest, as the number has already risen to 10 bidding groups, without the major competitive banks having formerly established acquisition teams. The latest bank to join the run for control of NatWest is former building society Abbey National, which has appointed a strong team, including Lehman Brothers and Warburg.
