250 replacement shelved

Article Abstract:

Rolls-Royce has scrapped plans to develop a 'World Engine' replacement for the Allison 250 Series helicopter engine. The decision was prompted by the company's difficulties in trying to reconcile the low-cost design needs of industrial gas turbine customers with the certification needs for aviation use. The World Engine program was intended to use new technologies such as ceramics to develop a common engine for both airborne and ground applications.
