The fast food market in Spain is expected to get saturated especially in the major cities as Madrid and Barcelona, Spain, pushing them to enter less populated markets. The market is also expected to benefit from the growing trend of women working, higher income levels and increased acceptance of the format while growth rates of the market, however, is expected. Volume growth from the burgers and pizzas sectors, however, is expected to rise but the saturation element and the rising competition among fast food chains will significantly affect future trends from 1997 to 2002.

Article Abstract:

The fast food market in Spain has proliferated in number of outlets to 1,496 fast food stores in 1997 with growth rate of 121.3% from 1993 to 1997. During the review period, nominal growth value is computed at 157.7% but in real terms the market grew by about 121.5%. The review period witnessed a certain amount of consolidation in major sectors of the fast food market such as in burgers and pizza. Significant growth, however, was attributed to the appearance of ice cream parlors and the bocadilleria sectors.
