Ukraine Pres Leonid Kuchma has initiated a mass privatisation programme that may slightly ease the difficulties foreign businesspeople face when trying to invest in the country. Although somewhat less difficult, investing will still be hampered by government red tape and dishonest local businesspeople.

Ukraine's Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko resigned on Jun 23, 1997, primarily because the nation is in serious economic trouble. Economic growth fell by 10% in 1996, despite the country's vast resources and favorable location. Arbitrary tax laws and government policies have discouraged entrepreneurship.
