Article Abstract:

Eforts to decongest airports and address slot delay problems have encouraged US airlines to consider the use of rotary wing aircraft. Unlike fixed wing aircraft, rotorcraft can approach at right angles to conventional runways, makes teeper instrument approaches, transit at a relatively low level, hover and furnish worthwhile scheduled services to thousands of passengers. However, air traffic control and national civil aviation authorities continue to be resistant to the idea of using helicopters to ease problems relating to airline passenger traffic.

Agusta's new Power

Article Abstract:

Agusta SpA's A109E Power helicopter was designed to meet the requirements of the 21st century. A proof to the A109E's excellent performance is the more than 150 units sold in just fours years since it was introduced in 1996. The A109E is also the first twin-engined helicopter to complete single-pilot IFR certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. Despite the increase in the price of the A109E to around $3.6 million, demand for the helicopter continues to remain at about 40 units per year.
