The Asian financial crisis which began in 1997 has affected most of the world. Financial panic has become less accute, and East Asia was relatively calm following a default crisis in Russia. Currencies in the region have stabilized. Gross domestic product is likely to drop in 1998, especially in Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand. The countries involved have suffered outflows of capital, and they have a basic need for replacement capital.
