There is a debate as to when the Americas were settled, with some theorists arguing that settlers came from Asia across the Bering Straits around 14,000 years ago. Critics argue that there is too much genetic diversity for settlement to have been this late, and linguist, Johanna Nichols, also claims that linguistic diversity points to earlier settlement. However, Oxford University's John Nettle argues that linguistic diversity may point to a later settlement since languages disappear over time as well as being born.
