U.K. government plans to set up a Bett er Buildings Summit has been revealed in a recently launched "Energy White Paper." The White Paper seeks a new energy policy to accommodate future challenges that include the formation of a low carbon economy via the support of renewables. The major commitments of the White Paper are examined.

The implications for acoustic performance of new housing are described and Robust Details Ltd. has been set up as the body authorized to use its robust details as a means of complying with Approved Document E.

Despite efforts by the government to preserve old houses in Northern Ireland, many thousands of thatched cottages there have been demolished since the 1950s. Some are critical of the government's rules on demolishing and restoring historic buildings.
