Trade within region is picking up, underpinning hopes

Article Abstract:

Intraregional trade in Asia has been witnessing remarkable growth, bolstering hopes of a long-term economic recovery. Singapore, for instance, reported record-breaking growth on its non-oil trade for May 1999. The country's Taiwan exports considerably increased by 51% during the same year, while exports to South Korea and Japan rose to 61% and 16%, respectively. Other Asian countries including Taiwan and Japan have likewise registered improved gains despite fluctuations in trade surplus and current accounts.
