Traders focus on HypoVereinsbank risk

Article Abstract:

During the fall of 1998, Bayerische Hypo-& Vereinsbank AG posted a surprising provision of 3.5 billion deutschmarks ($1.98 billion) for potential losses on financing for real estate carried out by the former Bayerische Hypotheken-& Wechselbank AG. The company also said it would post approximately 2.8 billion marks in regular risk provisions in 1998. Analysts believe that HypoVereinsbank's high risk provisions will not seriously affect the company's earnings in 1999.
