Tribal tales: director's unique production spotlights age-old Aboriginal culture

Article Abstract:

Don Freeman and his wife Judy have made Australian Aboriginal culture more familiar both at home and overseas through the Tjapukai Aboriginal Dance Theatre they launched in 1987. Located in Kuranda in Far North Queensland, it drew little local interest until Freeman daringly took the troupe overseas to rave reviews. Now it has brought millions of dollars and more than a million visitors to Kuranda, supported local artists, and launched many acting careers. The Freemans plan next to open a cultural theme park.

A capital dilemma: Tokyo's vulnerability to earthquakes prompts search for new location

Article Abstract:

There is a growing debate in Japan focused on the issue of moving the country's political center away from Tokyo, which serves as both the political and economic center of the nation. Overcrowding and high property prices fuel the debate, compounded by Tokyo's scientifically documented susceptibility to earthqaukes. Among the possible locations for a new political center is Sendai in the Miyagi prefecture, which is already established as Japan's fastest-developing city.

A community on edge: ban on whaling threatens future of Ayukawa

Article Abstract:

Ayukawa, a small village in northeastern Japan, and three other villages may lose their livelihood if the International Whaling Commission (IWC) does not end its 1987 ban on the hunting of Minke whales. Ayukawa has long relied on small-scale whaling in coastal waters as its chief source of income and as a way of life. The IWC estimates that 500,000 Minke whales now exist in the world's oceans, which villagers cite as proof that this species can be safely hunted.
