Variety show

Article Abstract:

The most significant difference between the Nordic countries is their varying approach to Europe and the European Union. Each of the five Nordic countries has a distinct policy regarding Europe. Finland is the most enthusiastic about Europe, while Denmark has gained a reputation for being willing to confront the European Union on sensitive issues. Sweden's policy towards the European Union is the most confused, with the minority Social Democratic government being divided over the single European currency. The Nordic countries also differ in areas including the economy and neutrality.

A future apart?

Article Abstract:

A number of key factors will determine the future of links between Nordic countries. These are military, political and economic developments in Russia, which is an unpredictable presence on the periphery of the Nordic region, European Union membership, which may prove too attractive to resist, and welfare. Nordic countries are quite similar in their humanity and their efficiency, but it is likely that their responses to these issues will differ considerably.
